Who is Darla?

Who is Darla?

McDavid-Darla-Aug-2013-DWI’m just your everyday gal who loves to write. My favorite part of life is being the mother of Dan, but I also enjoy my work as an administrative professional and a children’s Sunday school teacher. I earned a bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies from the University of California, and over the past 30 years I have shared my writing skills with hundreds of companies and individuals. Most of this experience occurred during the 20-plus years that I owned a secretarial service.

I am also a bit of a computer geek with over 20 years of experience with the technology. Back in the day, I created files and directories with MS-DOS, repaired hard drives, upgraded the memory, installed hardware and software — all out of necessity and with no fear. Much has changed since I powered up my first PC all those years ago: a Radio Shack Tandy that was pre-megabyte.

The busyness of life, though, did not allow me to pursue writing as I’ve desired or to keep in step with what I call a fast-tech world. Since the Tandy first arrived in my home office in the late 1980’s, I’ve experienced several life-changing events, which took their toll. Eventually I had to give up being a stay-at-home mom, took on full-time jobs, and used evening hours for paid typing projects. I put aside my writing goals, and technology and social media advances sped past me as I focused on raising a son and making ends meet.

Well, it’s a new day: the busyness has settled, my baby is an adult, the emotional wounds have healed, and I’m feeling creative. It’s time to get back on track.

  1. My name is Darla and I also love to write! I received my degree in English and had hoped to become an editor, still working on that. I look forward to reading more of your posts!
The name Darla and writing must go hand in hand!

      1. Not sure how funny it is, but here we go… I was born (obviously). My parents had already named my older sister after my father so my mother wanted me named after her. She couldn’t find a name to match her name, Darlene, until she was watching the television show Our Gang. She said little Darla ran across the screen and she instantly knew that was to be my name. 🙂
How did you get your name?

      2. Hey, Darla – I’m so sorry. Somehow I missed this comment from almost a year ago! My older sister loved watching Our Gang. She had three brothers younger than herself, and she asked our mother if her first sister could have the name Darla. Mom said yes and kept her promise when I was born. Now, if you tell me your middle name is Denise, I’m going to faint. Hope you and your writing are doing well!
